Recall: Bowflex SelectTech 552 and 1090 Dumbbells

This recall is being issued by Johnson Health Tech, who acquired the Bowflex brand in 2024 from Nautilus, Inc as part of the Nautilus bankruptcy.

The issue is the weight plates of the dumbbells could dislodge during use, resulting in hundreds of documented injuries and other mishaps.

The recall appears to include all 5-52.5lb and 10-90lb SelectTech dumbbells ever sold, not limited to any specific run. This means 3.8 million pairs sold over 20 years, since 2004. We have mentioned these dumbbells in many articles on this site, including an article comparing the features of this and other adjustable dumbbells, and it’s obviously been a popular model for years.

In 2021, Bowflex had a recall of their SelectTech barbells. Foreshadowing things to come? Although the barbells had a much different design, the issue itself of weights coming loose is similar.

As of writing, the company does not yet have a redesigned model. Their product page has it out of stock with the note, “New version coming soon”. Submit a claim form, and they will send you a store voucher. However, the voucher is pro-rated to an amount depending on how long ago you bought it.

The official Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice is here.
