Common Crossfit Shoulder Injuries

We have developed a list of  common shoulder injuries with simple explanations to help you better understand what Shoulder Injuries you might have

Biceps Tendonitis

The most commonly reported symptom of biceps tendonitis is pain along the upper arm bone and shoulder joint. The pain is usually most severe while making overhead movements or lifting heavy objects, or when the arm is in a bent position. If you experience shoulder pain that gets worse when you make overhead movements or lift heavy objects, and it does not improve after several days of rest, you should make an appointment with your doctor. Biceps tendonitis may occur due to direct injury to the tendon, but it is most often caused by overuse and normal wear and tear as you age. It is important to set up a rehabilitation program with your doctor to help relieve the pain.

Calcific Tendonitis of the Shoulder

Calcium deposits can exist within the tendons and not cause pain or other symptoms, especially when they are deep. People with calcific tendonitis might notice pain while moving their shoulder that does not improve with resting the joint. Some individuals experience difficulty sleeping because of the pain.

Frozen Shoulder

The classic sign of frozen shoulder is shoulder pain combined with a decrease in mobility of the shoulder joint. If you have shoulder pain or stiffness with a decreased range of motion that does not resolve on its own within a few days, make an appointment with your doctor to have your shoulder evaluated. Frozen shoulder can occur without traumatic injury, so get an exam even if you do not recall hurting your shoulder. Frozen shoulder will not go away without treatment, so it is very important that you seek medical care.

Impingement Syndrome

If shoulder pain with swelling and difficulty raising or lowering your arm persists for a few days, make an appointment with your doctor to have your shoulder evaluated. Impingement syndrome is treatable, but if you wait too long to seek treatment, the condition can progress to become frozen shoulder or, in more extreme cases, result in a rotator cuff tear. The beginning signs of impingement syndrome can be very mild. Without treatment, it can progress and lead to more serious complications, so seek treatment early.

Osteoarthritis of the Shoulder

The most commonly reported symptom of osteoarthritis is a deep ache within the shoulder joint. The pain begins gradually and increases over the years. At first, the pain occurs during movement and activity but decreases with rest. As the disease advances, the shoulder pain is present even during rest. Eventually, you may experience pain that is severe enough to interfere with sleep. Another common symptom is limited range of motion. Everyday activities such as combing your hair, getting dressed, or reaching to get an item off a shelf will become increasingly difficult. You may also experience stiffness, weakness, muscle spasms, or a grinding, crackling, or snapping sound when you move your shoulder. Your pain may increase due to humidity or other changes in the weather.

Rotator Cuff Strain or Shoulder Sprain

The most common symptoms of rotator cuff injuries and shoulder sprains are pain, stiffness, and weakness in the shoulder. Patients usually experience pain over the top of the shoulder and arm, and pain may continue all the way down to the elbow. You may have difficulty lifting your arm overhead and completing everyday tasks such as getting dressed, brushing your hair, and carrying objects. If your pain persists for more than two to three days and you are still unable to reach upward or to the side, it is time to contact your doctor to determine whether you have a rotator cuff injury.

Separated Shoulder

If you have suffered a blow to the shoulder or have fallen, symptoms may include: shoulder pain; weakness in your shoulder or arm; bruising or swelling/inflammation; limited range of shoulder motion; a bump on the top of your shoulder. The severity of a separated shoulder injury is graded on a scale from I to III.

Shoulder Instability

The main symptoms of shoulder instability are extreme pain, weakness or loss of sensation in the arm, and a feeling that the shoulder is slipping out of the joint socket. If the dislocation is caused by injury or trauma, there will also be swelling, bruising, and tenderness. Symptoms can vary depending on the direction of the dislocation or subluxation.

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS)

The general symptoms of TOS include pain in your shoulder and neck and numbness in your fingers. You may also experience burning, tingling, and numbness in your arm. There are several different types of TOS, and each comes with its own set of symptoms.
